Salt is an indispensable ingredient in our daily lives and witchcraft.
Ritual salts add to our craft and can be infused with other energies, like lunar energy to add potency.
Moon salts are an excellent way to harness the energy of the full and new moon and bring it into your magick and home.
One of the insightful lessons we gain from the moon is that everything is cyclical, impermanent, regenerated and then renewed. The knowledge that where total darkness exits, light will shine again and awareness that darkness will eventually fall where light illuminates.
Here’s how you can use moon salts and how to make them.
Lunar Energy
Lunar energy continually affects our lives, whether we’re aware of it or not. The moon’s gravitational pull combined with the earth’s rotational force creates ocean tides that occur in some freshwater rivers and lakes too.
And since up to 60% of the human body comprises water, lunar energy impacts us as well.
The moon is a feminine energy that reflects women’s fertility by mirroring menstrual cycles. Not that her energy is reserved for ladies only – anyone wanting to bring the normal process of birth, growth, death, and rebirth benefits.
Naturally, this cycle doesn’t only apply to physical birth and death. We go through it time and again in our lifetime, experiencing it in our development, relationships, career, and ongoing progression through our bodies.
Using Moon Salts
The moon brings two sets of energy for us to use:
Full Moon
- successful completion
- reaping the rewards of past efforts
- heightened energy and vibrancy
- embarking on new beginnings
- gratitude for past lessons and accomplishments
New Moon
- closure and letting go
- reflection and learning from the past
- rest and repose
- setting intentions
- sowing the seeds of new beginnings
Salt compliments lunar energy beautifully since it absorbs and retains energy, good and bad. You can either extract and dispose of negative energy or keep positive energy.
The elemental energy of salt is earth and water, making it both grounding and cleaning.
Although sea salt is the best option, infusing any salt with the moon’s energy allows you to use it throughout the lunar cycles.
Moon Salt Ideas
There are a few ideas for how you can use moon salts, but they’re by no means the only way. Once you start using moon salts, you’ll come up with many more of your own.
When you’re looking to cleanse and get rid of events, emotions, and people, infuse salts with correspondences that match your intentions under the new moon. Likewise, infusing salts with retentive, positive things under the full moon also brings your desired outcome.
Moon salts elevate ritual baths. All salts are cleansing, and adding them to your bath water will wash away impurities and flush out toxins. While that leans towards New moon energy, it can be used for Full moon energy, too, depending on how you made your moon salts.
During spell and ritual work, sprinkle moon salts on your altar or working area and onto and around candles. Or use it to mark your circle of protection.
You can use it in the same ways around your home and office to draw in or repel energy by putting it in small containers in vital places.
Another way to draw on lunar energy is to put your moon salts into a tiny pouch or cork-topped glass bottle and carry it as a talisman.
Finally, you can make a cleansing salt water flush to detoxify your body. However, avoid doing it often or if you have a chronic medical condition or are pregnant. Do a body detox a day or so before intense ritual or spell work.
Ritual Bath and Flush Process
Don’t ever do a moon salt bath and flush simultaneously because it can have very harmful effects, even if you’re healthy. Be sure to keep hydrated after both and put time aside to rest because saltwater can make you feel weak.
Himalayan pink salt is sea salt and considered milder than regular sea salt, making it safer for a moon salt flush. Drink the flush on an empty stomach in as short a time as you can manage.
Ritual bath
- Combine ½ cup of Epsom salts with ¼ cup sea salt in a bowl.
- Add 18 drops of essential oils that align with your intention.
- Place the mixture under either the full or new moon overnight.
- Stir into a bath of warm water.
- Soak in the water for between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Hydrate your skin with body oil or lotion afterward.
Salt flush
- Place 1 tablespoon of Himalayan pink salt under either the full or new moon overnight.
- Boil 1 liter (a quart) of water and let it cool down.
- Add the 1 tablespoon of Himalayan pink salt and stir until dissolved.
- Stir in 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice.
- Consume while still warm.
Making Moon Salts with Intention
Use pure, non-iodized salts for the best results.
You can add any (and as many) herbs or essential oils that match your intentions. Those that already align with lunar energy will boost your moon salts, though.
Make enough to last through the lunar cycle, and you can make two batches – one with new moon energy and another with full moon energy. Store your moon salts in a glass bottle or wooden or cardboard box. Avoid tins because salt corrodes them.
Place crystals around or on top of the container.
Your intention is the most crucial component for all spells and rituals, so know what you want your moon salts for before starting.
What you’ll do:
- Place the salt in a bowl.
- Draw in divine energy.
- Place your open palms over the salt and channel your intentions.
- Add the herbs and essential oil.
- Mix thoroughly.
- Surround the bowl with crystals and leave under the full or new moon overnight.
Moon Correspondences
These correspondences align with either the full or new moon. You can use many more, but remember not to put crystals into your moon salts because they can get ruined.

Full and New Moon
The number 18 is associated with the moon in numerology and is a symbol of intuition and mystery.
Added together, 1 + 8= 9, the last and highest value of the single-digit numbers. Therefore, it represents the culmination of experience and wisdom, bringing the energy of death and rebirth, endings and new beginnings.
Add either 18 or 9 drops of each essential oil to your moon salts to harness these energies.
